What Lombardi Means To Me:
It is rare when an organization you believe in touches your life. This is what the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center did for my late wife and I, at the most difficult of times.
I began working for charitable causes early. My eyes were open wide to the fulfilling opportunities of giving back through corporate experiences with a few prominent American companies. When I married my soul mate, Karen Brown, we set a goal to help through personal involvement in a local charity. Close friends introduced us to the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center through its Annual Gala. After attending the event and learning more about the Center, we mutually decided to support the cause. It was impressive to learn all the money raised goes directly to cancer research. When I ventured out on my own, Karen and I made sure FosterSoft, Incorporated became an annual sponsor.
Then the afflicting illness we raised money to fight against struck our family. My wife received a diagnosis of breast cancer. Raising a three-year-old daughter made it the most challenging time-period of my life. When Dr. Marc Lippman, Director of Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center learned about Karen’s diagnosis, he called me personally. I was expecting to hear from a staff administrator or a physician, not from Dr. Lippman. He did more than speak comforting words. He asked that I bring my wife to Georgetown. There, the staff of physicians took care of her while supporting my daughter and I until Karen surcame in 2003.
Had this tragedy not occurred more than a decade ago, my wife and I would have continued to mutually support the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
As a member of the Corporate Executive Committee for the Georgetown Lombardi Annual Gala, I have witnessed, first-hand, the dedication of its entire staff. The Center leaves no stone unturned in patient care while also conducting cutting edge research on the fight against cancer.
Various fruits of this research include the co-development of the HPV vaccine Gardisil, development of the cell immortalization method, significant findings on the impact of estrogen in promoting the growth of breast cancer cells. Further, the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation in D.C. The Center has the largest number of internationally recognized experts for our area as well as the highest number of clinical technologies. I take great pride in the part I play to support their vital work.
